The emphasis (accent) is almost always on the 1 and the 4.
🎵The "Go-To" Pattern:
D | - | - | D | U | -(Count: 1 2 3 4 & 5 6)
🥁Detailed Breakdown

Beat 1 (Heavy Down): Hit the bass note of the chord firmly. This is the heartbeat of the song.

Beats 2 & 3: If you strum here, keep it very light or skip them entirely to let the bass note ring.

Beat 4 (Accent Down): A strong downward brush across the higher strings.

Beat 4 & (Up): A quick upstroke to add texture before the next measure.

Beats 5 & 6: Usually left open or played with very soft, ghost-like downstrokes to maintain the "swing."

🔑3 Keys to the Stapleton Sound
1. The "Boom-Chicka" Bass Note Chris Stapleton often plays with a pick-and-finger style or heavy thumb emphasis. Hit the individual root note of the chord on Beat 1 (e.g., the Low E for a G chord) before strumming the full chord on Beat 4. This creates that authentic country-soul depth.2. Dynamic Crescendo The song starts very intimately. In the beginning, the strumming should be minimal—almost just single strums per chord. As he reaches the "Fire away..." chorus, the strumming needs to "Level Up" in volume and intensity. Use a wider arm motion for the chorus to capture that raw emotion.3. Embellished Transitions (The "Walk-ups") One of the most recognizable parts of this song is the bass walk-down from G to Em.

🪄The Trick: While moving from G to Em, play the F# note (2nd fret, Low E string) on the way down. This small detail is what separates a beginner cover from a professional-sounding performance.

🧠Practice Tip for Beginners
The "Anchor Finger" Technique: Remember to keep your pinky finger "glued" to the 3rd fret of the High E string while switching between G, Em7, and Cadd9. This creates a pivot point that prevents the hand from getting "lost" on the fretboard and ensures the chords ring out with a consistent, shimmering drone.
🎸Performance Tips for Students

The "Anchored" Technique: Keep your 3rd and 4th fingers on the 3rd fret of the B and high E strings throughout the verse. This makes the transition between G, Dsus4, and Cadd9 much smoother for beginners.

Strumming Pattern: A relaxed 6/8 feel works best. A solid starting pattern is: D - D - D-U - D - D.

The "Fire" Run: In the chorus, the vocal melody on "Fire..." actually moves through several chord changes (Em7 to D/F# to G), which is a great exercise in timing.

🚀 Want Faster Results?
This tutorial will help you —but learning alone can still be slow & challenging. If you want to:

Progress faster

Fix mistakes instantly

Stay motivated

👉 Personalized guidance makes a huge difference. At GuitaRealm, we offer 1:1 beginner guitar lessons tailored to your goals and skill level.Consider trying out a lesson @1:1 LiveSee what other students are saying about their progress with our 1:1 Live Lessons: - ⭐️ Reviews
